# Irrational Numbers Symbol

Irrational numbers symbols are numbers that are not rational!

If you just think for a moment what the word 'rational' means, sensible, clear, logical. Then Irrational is the opposite of all of those words. Finally, something in maths that actually doesn't make sense, even to a mathematician!

Basically, they are numbers that cannot be written exactly. They are the worst and most strangest, awkward looking numbers with pi's, roots and trigs.

Irrational numbers cannot be located on the number line precisely. The numbers are non-recurring decimals that goes on forever.

The decimal goes on and on with out showing any pattern to it.

Here are some examples of irrational numbers:

1. Square roots that are not perfect squares.

eg √2, √3, √5, √6, √7, √8, √10, √11

2. Cube roots of numbers that are not perfect cubes.

eg ₃√2, ₃√3, ₃√4, ₃√5,

3. π and expressions involving π.

eg π, π², π+3

4. Most of the trig functions where the angle is a rational number of degrees.

eg cos17°, tan34.2°, sin55°
