What is algebra?

What is algebra is a huge concept to explain. But quite simply, algebra is a mathematical word used to describe a general method that uses letters instead of numbers. It is general because it is used in all applications of mathematics.

This is what we mean by huge, it is used in absolutely everything in maths. In school, we don't even realize we are using it, but we are.

The word itself, 'algebra', derives from 'al-jabr' used in an Arabic text of the ninth century AD.

The ground works of algebra, and how its done step by step can be viewed on the following pages, in this particular order:

The very first topic before anything else I will cover with my home students is algebra. I will cover it from top to bottom until its absorbed into the bloodstream, literally.

This way, students are actually confident in class and are able to do any application of math comfortably, knowing that its...JUST algebra.

Usually, I will give students a choice of what they would like to go over. Always, they will most definitely be stuck on a math topic related to algebra.
