A general term applied to the system of representing whole and fractional numbers in the base of ten.

A decimal fraction is one with denominator being a power of ten. For example, 4/10, 3/100, 48/1000, etc.

The base ten place value system for whole numbers is extended in the decimal system to include the representation of decimal fractions.

17 13/100=17.13

tens, units, tenths, hundredths

The decimal point is used to identify place value as indicated above. The decimal separates the whole number from the fractional part. The 7. is units, 1 is in the tens column, .1 is the tenths and 3 is in the hundredths column.

Basically any fractional number can be written as a decimal. The decimal point being the place that separates the two apart.

All rational numbers can be represented in decimal form by a terminating or recurring sequence of decimal digits.
