Kumon Kids Kill Timed Tests

by Paul
(Chicago, IL USA)

My son's 1st grade class started doing timed tests of 100 addition problems (sums from 0 to 18) in 8 minutes. If the child could do 100 in 8, that child is tested for 7 minutes, and so on until s/he can do 100 in 3 minutes. That child proceeds to subtraction problems in the same progression of timed tests.

The kids who go to Kumon quickly moved up the ranks. One girl is even doing timed tests of mixed problems. That sealed the deal for me, and so we put our son in Kumon. Recognizing that his classmates who attend Kumon are faster, he is willing to do Kumon work, which he finds easy anyway.

I suppose that in 2nd grade, they'll be doing timed tests in multiplication and division. Perhaps my son won't kill the addition tests now, but I hope that by next year, he'll speed through the multiplication/division timed tests.

I should have known better. I tutored at Kumon for a year before my son was born.
